Fresh statement on electronic cigarettes
Fresh statement on electronic cigarettes in advance of vote in European Parliament on Tobacco Products Directive (Wednesday, Feb 26)
Ailsa Rutter, Director of Fresh, said: “One in two smokers die early, mainly as a result of the poisonous chemicals in tobacco smoke. From what we know so far, electronic cigarettes are almost certainly less harmful. We recognize the role they could play in reducing the harm to smokers who are trying to take steps to quit or cut down.
“However, let’s not forget that nicotine is still a highly addictive substance. The sort of glamorous advertising we are now seeing, including link ups with celebs and football clubs, risks making smoking more attractive to children. There are also concerns about quality control of cheap imports and whether they are effective.
“This is why we support the EU Products Directive, which would ensure long term safeguards on quality and safety, minimize the risks of electronic cigarettes becoming a gateway product to children and help us monitor any long term health issues. These are sensible precautions while making sure people using them are not restricted.”
